Space Planning: A Guide to Creating Functional, Joyful Spaces
Space Planning: Where It All Begins
Let’s Talk About Your Space
So, you’re thinking about changing things up in your home, or perhaps something just isn’t working for you in your current setup. Before you dive into the fun of selecting paint colors, fabrics, and decor — tempting as they are — take a moment to think about how you really want to use each room. What do you need from your space? Make a list. This is thoughtful space planning, making the most of what you have to truly fit your needs.
Why I Get Excited About It
It might seem a bit over the top or silly but put aside the practical details, like temporarily suspending the 'how to make an idea work' and thinking with a child's imagination. You’ll be surprised at what you can come up with! This is why this phase is exciting to me: it invites you to explore all the possibilities of your space. It's an opportunity to reimagine and enhance the flow of your daily life.
Designing for the Way We Live
An Inviting Feeling
Have you ever been in a room that feels good? Where being there feels good and moving around feels natural? That’s a thoughtful design. It's about making sure you're not running an obstacle course through your living room, leaving too much space between furniture so that it feels uncomfortable, or always having a table within reach to set down your drink while relaxing on the sofa.
Things to Think About
When planning out a space, I often think, "Is this the easiest way to get from point A to B?" or "Is that sharp-edged table a disaster waiting to happen for kids or pets?" Reflecting on these small details can lead to a much more pleasant room. And yes, outlets should be where you’ll actually use them – because extension cords everywhere is a no-go.

This room needed to be a bedroom, an office, a library, and a sit-and-chat-with-a-friend room.

Zones for Activity and Rest
Life Happens in Zones
Design your home with specific zones in mind: a cozy nook perfect for curling up with a book, open spaces inviting impromptu yoga sessions, or areas that encourage your kids to play and create. Your daughter likes to color, but she always drags (and drops) her colored pencils from another designated area to the coffee table. Possibly, you can make it easier for her while making it more attractive for you by placing a mini art station in the living area with a small attractive set up right at the coffee table.
Balance Is Key
The goal is to create a balanced home that’s as welcoming for a lively family game night as it is for a calm movie night. Achieving this balance might mean choosing smaller or larger furniture pieces and thoughtful placement, ensuring every area serves multiple purposes without feeling cluttered.

When It Just Doesn’t Make Sense
Overl”
Overlooking the flow of your home can turn daily life into a bit of a chore. It’s like your space is just not on board with your plans. And honestly, who needs that kind of negativity?
But When It Clicks...
Ah, but your home becomes your ally when everything falls into place. It’s there for you, making life easier, calmer, and outright more enjoyable. It’s about crafting a space that’s ready for anything, whether that's a quiet night in or a last-minute gathering.
