How Inset Cabinetry Sparked My Passion for British-Inspired Interiors

The Design Detail That Led to Discovering British Interiors

When my husband, Geoff, and I first walked through our Cape Cod home, I could already see its potential. The built-in cabinetry, the charming details—it had so much character. But there was one problem: the kitchen was tiny!

I turned to Geoff and said, “What if we just blew out this kitchen wall?” Not only would it solve the kitchen’s size and layout issues, but it would also create much-needed access to the backyard, which was nonexistent at the time. That one idea set off an unexpected design journey.

Wanting to respect the home’s original charm, I researched inset cabinetry. The house itself had already decided for me—every built-in was inset. That research led me straight to British craftsmanship, where I became captivated by their ability to blend tradition with function. And just like that, my love affair with English interiors began.

Why British Interiors Felt Like Home

The more I explored, the more I realized—I was uncovering a design style that resonated with everything I already loved. British interiors weren’t just about good craftsmanship; they were about color, pattern, and layers—all elements that had long been part of my design philosophy.

British kitchens feel collected. They have depth and warmth, rich colors, handcrafted details, and a mix of old and new that makes them feel truly lived-in.

It was everything I was drawn to:

  • Inset Cabinetry with Classic Detailing – Tailored, timeless, and full of character, much like the designs from Plain English and deVOL Kitchens.

  • A Love for Color & Pattern – Bright yet not overly saturated in color, warm neutrals, and floral or checkered prints layered effortlessly, just like in the work of Rita Konig and Nina Campbell.

  • An Embrace of the Imperfect – A mix of antique and new, worn and polished, refined yet relaxed.

The Power of Good Bones & Thoughtful Layers

As I continued down the rabbit hole of British interiors, I realized that their charm isn’t just in the cabinetry or the color choices—it’s in the philosophy behind them. The most beautiful homes aren’t over-designed; they evolve naturally over time, with layers of texture, well-loved furniture, and a feeling that every piece has a story.

This approach completely changed how I saw my own home. Instead of simply updating the kitchen, I wanted to honor the home’s entire character while making it feel effortlessly inviting—a space where family and friends naturally want to gather.

And it worked. Friends who had no idea we had added an addition walked in and asked, “Wait… where is the addition?” The best compliment ever.

Bringing British Inspiration Into My Own Designs

That one decision detail led me to a deeper understanding of what I truly love in interiors: a space that is timeless yet full of life, layered but never fussy, charmingly imperfect yet deeply intentional.

Whether in my own home or in my design work, I always come back to these British-inspired principles—respected architecture, thoughtful layering, warm lighting, and a fearless embrace of color and pattern. Because at the end of the day, the most inviting homes aren’t just beautiful—they feel like they’ve been loved for generations.
